5 reasons why I love teaching Pilates!

Why teaching Pilates has given me a purpose and a reason to keep my body feeling strong and flexible.

Remember the first time you ever thought about old age? I do. My mum invited me to join her for a yoga class for seniors. I was in my 40s. I walked into a room full of ladies with white hair, but the yoga teacher, Marie, was the only person who still had black hair and a beautiful posture. Even more importantly, Maria was a flexible and very passionate teacher. She must have been in her late 70s. She was confident and demonstrated exercises with glamour and ease. That day, I decided I wanted to be like her when I got to that age.

In September 2023, I will have taught Pilates for almost 12 years, and I love it more than ever.

5 reasons why I still enjoy teaching Pilates.

1. People will learn how to maintain their bodies - Assisting individuals in comprehending their bodies and their inherent boundaries is something I genuinely enjoy. By doing so, people can effectively care for their physical well-being, proactively reducing the risk of injuries and falls.

2. Each class is different - Maintaining an active mind and body is my personal goal, and I find great satisfaction in crafting each class from the ground up. This entails continuously acquiring new knowledge and expanding my repertoire to ensure our sessions remain challenging and relevant for our clients. Additionally, I appreciate the presence of diverse fitness levels among our participants, as it compels me to delve deeper into understanding the intricacies of the human body and its limitations.

3. Everybody is the winner - Sharing my profound passion for Pilates with others is a driving force for me. By doing so, I aim to empower more individuals to comprehend their bodies, enhance their posture, improve flexibility, and achieve balance. These aspects are pivotal for maintaining a high quality of life, particularly as we age. Pilates is gentle enough to be right for you at any age, and every exercise can be modified to meet where your body is on a particular day.

4. Making a difference - A low-resistance exercise such as Pilates is enjoyable for older people. Furthermore, an appropriately designed class can improve bone density, posture, balance, and gait. It can also increase mobility and decrease stress while improving memory and cognitive thinking. Pilates can decrease back pain, boost immunity and prevent injury. What’s there not to love!?

5. Flexible hours to fit in with work commitments - I manage two enterprises — a Pilates studio and a Photography/Marketing Consultancy—catering to a clientele primarily consisting of working individuals. Consequently, I understand the importance of accommodating their schedules, as they can only attend classes before or after work.

Here is my recommendation for people who have never done Pilates.

  1. If you are 60+ and active, you are ready to start our All-Fitness Levels classes. If you have a pre-existing condition or have not been active for a while, I recommend you consult your doctor before starting any exercise program.

  2. Start with 5–10 Private sessions with a qualified, experienced Pilates teacher. Be patient and do your homework. Allow your body to learn a new ‘language’. Your teacher will modify exercises as needed. Practice regularly; you will be rewarded with a great feeling after each class.

  3. Sign-up for a 5-Week Beginner Level Program (Repeats for four terms)

  4. Join the All-Fitness Level Program! Re-visit the Beginner Level Program to return to Pilates fundamentals at a slower pace.
